Vietnam Expands Lime Exports as Global Demand for Quicklime and Hydrated Lime Grows

VIETNAM — August 2026 — Vietnam is strengthening its position as a competitive supplier of lime products to international markets, supported by abundant limestone resources, established mineral-processing industries, competitive production costs and convenient access to major shipping routes across Asia and beyond.

Vietnamese producers are increasingly supplying quicklime (calcium oxide), hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide), limestone powder and related mineral products to customers in industries ranging from steel and mining to water treatment, construction, agriculture, chemicals, paper and sugar processing.

Strong Export Performance

Available international trade data demonstrate that Vietnam already has a significant presence in the global quicklime market. In 2023, Vietnam exported approximately 265,156 tonnes of quicklime worth US$48.25 million. Major destinations included other Asian markets, Bangladesh, Australia, the Philippines and Indonesia.

Bangladesh has become an important destination for Vietnamese quicklime. In 2023, exports to Bangladesh reached approximately 36,506 tonnes, valued at US$6.64 million. Australia received about 18,633 tonnes, while the Philippines imported approximately 16,006 tonnes from Vietnam.

The figures indicate that Vietnamese lime producers have developed established export channels, particularly throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

Why Vietnam Has an Export Advantage

One of Vietnam’s key advantages is its limestone resource base. Limestone is the primary raw material used to manufacture quicklime and hydrated lime, allowing producers located near suitable deposits to reduce raw-material and transportation costs.

Vietnam’s geographic position is another advantage. Its coastline provides access to major maritime trade routes connecting Southeast Asia with South Asia, East Asia, Australia and other international markets.

Vietnamese suppliers can also offer different product forms according to customer requirements, including quicklime lump, quicklime powder and hydrated lime powder. Some producers operate integrated systems covering mining, processing, calcination, grinding and classification.

Growing Demand from Industrial Applications

Lime is an essential industrial material rather than simply a construction commodity.

Quicklime is widely used in steelmaking, mineral processing, mining, environmental applications, chemical production and sugar processing. Hydrated lime is commonly used in water treatment, construction, agriculture, chemical manufacturing and environmental control.

Vietnamese exporters are therefore targeting industries where consistent chemical specifications and reliable bulk supply are critical.

The diversity of applications creates opportunities for Vietnamese suppliers to move beyond traditional construction markets and develop long-term relationships with industrial buyers.

Key Export Markets

Asia remains the most important region for Vietnamese lime exports. Bangladesh, the Philippines, Indonesia and other Asian markets are particularly attractive because of their large industrial bases and relatively short shipping distances from Vietnam.

Australia and Northeast Asian markets also provide opportunities for suppliers capable of meeting strict technical specifications.

Vietnamese companies already report exports to markets including Bangladesh, India, the Philippines, Taiwan, China, South Korea, Cambodia, Indonesia and several markets outside Asia, demonstrating the potential for further international expansion.

From Commodity Supplier to Global Industrial Partner

The next stage of Vietnam’s lime-export industry will likely focus on more than price competitiveness.

International buyers increasingly look for suppliers that can provide:

  • Stable CaO and MgO specifications
  • Consistent reactivity and particle size
  • Low impurity levels
  • Reliable monthly production capacity
  • Bulk and containerized shipping options
  • Professional quality-control documentation
  • SGS or equivalent inspection where required
  • Stable long-term supply contracts
  • Technical support for industrial applications

This creates an opportunity for Vietnamese manufacturers to position themselves as long-term industrial partners rather than simply low-cost lime suppliers.

Outlook for Vietnamese Lime Exports

Vietnam’s combination of limestone resources, production capabilities, competitive costs and strategic maritime location provides a solid foundation for expanding lime exports.

The country’s existing export performance shows that international buyers are already sourcing Vietnamese quicklime. With continued investment in modern kilns, quality control, logistics and international sales networks, Vietnam has the potential to increase its presence in global markets for quicklime, hydrated lime and other limestone-based products.

For international buyers in steel, mining, water treatment, sugar, construction, chemicals and other industries, Vietnam is increasingly becoming a market worth considering when developing diversified lime supply chains.

Vietnam’s lime industry is no longer focused solely on domestic demand. Its growing export network is positioning the country as an increasingly important supplier of industrial lime to the global market.
